Paul Harris Fellowship

Rotary Wheel

In 1957, the Rotary Foundation launched the Paul Harris Fellowship in memory of it's founder and as an expression of appreciation for those who have contributed to the Foundation's humanitarian and educational programmes. After more than forty years recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow remains a respected and prestigious honour for Rotarians.

Selwyn Johnston

The Paul Harris Award to Selwyn Johnston.

At weekly meeting of the Club, on the 14th July, President Angela had the pleasant task of presenting a Paul Harris Award to Selwyn Johnston. President Angela outlined the background to the Paul Harris Award and then asked Rotarian Ivan Kee to read the citation.

Ivan began by saying that he had known the Johnston family for a long number of years. Selwyn attended Jones Memorial Primary School and Enniskillen High School. He was a member of the local Boys Brigade and went through the ranks, achieving the Queen's Badge. At the age of 17 he gained a place on a U. S. Exchange Trip through the local Rotaract Club. Selwyn has been involved in organising many local events including the development of Castle Island as a Conservation Area. He was also instrumental in encouraging Fermanagh District Council to hold the Annual Fireworks Display. Many charitable events have benefited from his enthusiasm including a Telethon in 1990.

However, Selwyn's main interest would be as a dedicated railway enthusiast. A member of the Railway Society of Ireland, he regularly works on RPSI steam trains and is a member of their Museum Council. Thanks to Selwyn Fermanagh has its own Railway Museum at Headhunters, here they have built up an extensive collection of railway memorabilia from the railways that permeated Fermanagh - The Great Northern Railway, The Clogher Valley Railway and the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway. This collection has been built up at personal expense over the years, and as Curator he has extensive links with other Museums in N. Ireland and further afield. Over the years Selwyn has organised railway events for the benefit of former employees such as the 1997 40th Anniversary of the Railway Closures. The 50th Anniversary was celebrated with a bus tour of the Bundoran line stations. He was also responsible for lobbying the Roads Service and Fermanagh District Council in renaming some footpaths along the former railway lines.

Selwyn also has a busy daily workload running a rehabilitation centre in helping people back into the workplace following a nervous breakdown. He is also working towards an M.A. and has prepared a Doctoral thesis for a Phd.

In 2014 Selwyn was involved in bringing steam engines to Fermanagh with the "Steam and Shamrocks" run on St. Patrick's Day from Irvinestown to Enniskillen as part of the annual parade. This year he was one of the main organisers in helping to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Eisenhower's historic visit to Portora playing fields to review the U.S. troops before D Day. This developed into a full day of events involving the U.S. Consul Gregory Burton, Her Majesty's Lieutenant Viscount Brookeborough, the Chairman of F.D.C. and Dean Kenneth Hall. This involved visiting various locations throughout the County which were associated with the U. S. forces during the war.

Selwyn gives full commitment to whatever task he takes on, he is a perfectionist and is meticulous in his planning, but is always keen to stay in the background and shy away from publicity.
