President Kenny gets a hair cut
Members of the Club recently visited Headhunters Railway Museum following an invitation from Selwyn Johnston, who twenty years ago was a Group Study Exchange Ambassor to Florida. The museum is located in a local hairdresser's shop run by brothers Gordon and Nigel Johnston.
The brothers first started collecting railway artefacts 35 years ago and held their first exhibition in Enniskillen Library in 1997. Following the success of this, former railway employees started taking an interest. The brothers were involved in a restoration project in Belcoo, but despite several attempts they were unable to obtain premises for their exhibition. However, in 2003 there was a change in the hairdressers and space became available to set up the exhibition, and on the 45th anniversary of the closure of Fermanagh Railways the exhibition was officially opened. The collection is continually being added to.
Local railway enthusiast Alan Devers gave an excellent presentation on the History of the Local Railway network, and explained many of the items on display and where they came from.
All the Rotarians present really enjoyed the visit, and some of them exchanged their memories of the local railway. Thanks to Headhunters for allowing us the privilege to visit the museum, it is probably the first time that a Rotary meeting has been held in railway museum.
